What is an Ear & Hearing Health Check?
An ear and hearing health check is a comprehensive examination of your ears and hearing, carried out by a trained member of our pharmacy team in a private consultation room at your local Lindsay & Gilmour pharmacy.
We use the TympaHealth system — a clinically validated, AI-powered device that combines ear imaging, hearing screening, and clinical decision support in one handheld tool. This is the same technology used by NHS practitioners and private audiologists, now available at your local pharmacy.
The check is suitable for anyone who:
- Has noticed a change in their hearing or is struggling to follow conversations
- Experiences ringing, buzzing, or humming in one or both ears
- Feels like one or both ears are blocked or full
- Wears hearing aids and wants to check their ear health
- Has a family history of hearing loss and wants a baseline check
- Has not had a hearing check in a number of years
- Has been told by their GP that they should get a hearing assessment
Where does the check take place?
The check is carried out in a private consultation room at your chosen Lindsay & Gilmour pharmacy. The appointment is confidential and takes approximately 20–30 minutes.
A trained pharmacy professional will carry out the full examination using the TympaHealth device.

Why Hearing Health Matters
Around 18 million people in the UK are deaf, have hearing loss or tinnitus — roughly 1 in 3 adults. An estimated 10 million adults could benefit from hearing aids, but only about 3 million use them.
Common causes of hearing problems
- Age-related hearing loss (presbycusis) — the most common cause in adults
- Ear wax build-up blocking the ear canal
- Ear infections, fluid behind the eardrum, or a perforated eardrum
- Prolonged exposure to loud noise — at work or leisure
- Certain medications that can affect hearing
- Genetic factors or a family history of hearing loss
The impact of untreated hearing loss
- Difficulty following conversations, especially in noisy places
- Tiredness from straining to hear throughout the day
- Social withdrawal and reduced confidence in group settings
- Links to cognitive decline when left unaddressed long-term
- Impact on relationships, work, and mental wellbeing
- Tinnitus that can be harder to cope with without advice and support
Only 6% of people in the UK without a hearing loss diagnosis had a hearing check in the past year — compared with 42% who had an eye test. A simple check at your local pharmacy can change that.

What Happens During Your Check?
Your appointment takes around 20–30 minutes. Here's exactly what to expect.
Welcome & Consultation
Your pharmacist will start with a brief conversation about your hearing history, any symptoms you've noticed, and whether you currently wear hearing aids. This helps tailor the examination to your specific concerns.
Ear Canal Examination
Using the TympaHealth device's high-definition digital otoscope, your pharmacist will examine both ear canals and eardrums. The image is displayed on a screen so you can see your own ear in real time. The system's AI helps flag anything that may need further attention.
TympaHealth AI-assisted imagingHearing Screening
A quick, non-invasive hearing test is carried out using the TympaHealth audiometry function. You'll listen to a series of tones through a headset and respond to what you can hear. This gives a clear picture of your hearing levels across different frequencies.
Clinically validated audiometryResults & Recommendations
Your pharmacist will explain the results of both the ear examination and the hearing screen. If everything looks healthy, you'll leave with peace of mind and advice on maintaining your ear health. If anything needs further attention, they'll guide you on the next steps.
What Happens Next?
Most customers leave with a clear understanding of their ear and hearing health. Here's what we do if further support is needed.
All Clear
If your ears and hearing are healthy, your pharmacist will advise on how to maintain good ear health and when to come back for a routine check. No further action needed.
Hearing Loss Detected
If the screening suggests a level of hearing loss, your pharmacist will recommend that you see your GP or an audiologist for a full diagnostic assessment, and explain what the results mean in plain terms.
Other Concerns Found
If the ear examination shows signs of infection, perforation, or another issue, you will be referred back to your GP with a clear summary of what was found during the pharmacy check.
